The moths that find your way around your porch light or into your pantry are usually more of an annoyance than anything. With their big bug eyes and often erratic flying pattern, moths are often considered a nuisance. But the moth that one woman found looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale!
New Hampshire Public Radio digital director Rebecca Lavoie shared a photo that she took of a beautiful pink, yellow, and white moth that visited her deck, and if you didn’t know any better, you might think it wasn’t real. The insect looks less like a real bug and more like a Pokemon or plush toy, but believe it or not, its colors haven’t been digitally altered at all.
The name of this colorful critter is the rosy maple moth. Unsurprisingly, they enjoy feeding on the leaves of maple trees, which is also where they lay their eggs.
The moths don’t eat once they exit their larval stage and gain their wings, and they can live for around nine months. Their coloring can trick potential predators into thinking that they’re poisonous.
Rebecca may be seeing more of these fuzzy friends around her place. After she posted her first photo, another rosy maple moth came to visit, settling on her screen door.
We have a feeling the world would have a more open mind toward bugs if they all looked like this!
