Italy’s coronavirus lockdown is causing some big changes in the country. While some changes are obvious, others are pleasantly surprising people. For example, fewer people out and about has led to lower pollution levels in the city, and for the first time in many people’s memory, the water in the canals is perfectly clear.

While many have assumed that the clear water is due to a drop in pollution, officials say that the real reason we can see to the bottom of the canals is that the lack of movement is allowing the sediment to settle to the bottom of the canals rather than getting stirred up and making the water murky.

If you look closely, you can even see tiny fish swimming around!

These may be tough times for everyone coping with the effects of the coronavirus itself and the impact it’s had on communities, but we can at least save some appreciation for the way nature reclaims what belongs to her when humans step out of the way for a little while.
