How many of us have been away for work (or even vacation) in a great hotel and thought, “This is nice, but I miss my pets”? Or, even if you don’t have any pets right now, maybe you’ve missed the company of a dog in your life.
One hotel has come up with a program that both satisfies this human need and the needs of adoptable dogs in need of loving homes. “Fostering Hope,” a program started by Mississippi-based Home2 Suites by Hilton Biloxi North/D’Iberville, has been running since 2018 and operates on a relatively simple process. The hotel brings dogs in from the Humane Society of South Mississippi to wait in their lobby, and guests can foster the dogs during their stay at the hotel if they so choose. Best of all, if they feel the connection is right, they can adopt the dogs!
The hotel chain is also pet-friendly, of course, so many of the dogs that stay with them are already owned by loving humans. Since this particular hotel specializes in long-term visits, humans can bond with their potential new pets for weeks or even months at a time.
The initiative also helps open up space at the shelter, which takes in about 8,000 animals a year. More dogs staying in the hotel (and being adopted by guests) means that the shelter can help rescue even more pups in need of homes.
Guests who want to take home an adoptable dog forever pay a $50 application fee. Of course, if the shelter believes that an applicant isn’t a good fit for a dog, they may deny their application and offer them a look around their shelter to choose a pup that would be better suited for them. They’re doing their due diligence to ensure that both dogs and humans go home happy and safe.
With over 30 dogs having found permanent homes through the program, it may be worthwhile for other hotels to look into starting similar programs to help give back to the people and pets in their local community!
