We all like to think we’d be selfless and brave when confronted with the choice to save someone we love — even at the cost of our own safety — but one little boy will never have to question if he’d show that kind of courage.
A six-year-old boy named Bridger has received international applause for his selfless decision to save his little sister from a dog attack. According to Bridger’s aunt, who shared her nephew’s story on Instagram, the two siblings were charged by a dog about a week ago.
Instead of running away, Bridger got between his sister and the dog, getting bit several times on his face and head through his selfless act. He then grabbed her hand and ran away with her to safety. His sister was unharmed thanks to his sacrifice, and while Bridger thankfully survived the attack, he was seriously injured in the process.
Bridger’s aunt said that her nephew ended up receiving about 90 stitches in his face. As for why he jumped into harm’s way knowing what could’ve happened, he said, “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.”
Bridger is now resting at home, and his aunt has given an update as to how he’s doing: “I just finished visiting with Bridger at his home. His wounds are looking so much better! He’s in great spirits, and his awesome personality is intact. He can’t smile too widely yet, but he was grinning as I read some of your comments to him. I’d also like to mention here that the dog’s owners are really great people who have been nothing but kind to Bridger and his family. We feel no resentment toward them at all, and—if anything—there’s only been an increase of love between our families as a result of this incident.”
