Ah, college. Remember when you were young, excited for life, and knew how to seize an opportunity the moment you saw it?
One young woman certainly saw her chance when she spotted a statue of Mike Wazowski (you know, the one-eyed, hilarious green guy from Disney’s Monster’s Inc.) hanging out in someone’s yard. Though the statue was pretty large, it also seemed a bit forgotten and discarded. The freshman college student, Alyssa Martinez, decided Mike would be better off in her hands. She shared the heartwarming story on Twitter:
Alyssa wanted to handle the “adoption” process properly, though, and wrote Mike’s current owners a letter explaining her intent.
The letter reads:
“To whom this may concern,
I am writing to you as an incoming college freshman who is moving in the next two weeks. My roommate and I drive past your magnificent Mike Wazowski statue every day and feel that he would be a great addition to our dorm. We would take great care of him and display him in the entrance of our home so he can greet our guests. Although money is tight right now, being that I am a college student, I am willing to pay for Mike. As a Class of 2020 graduate who has had to face many obstacles, I feel that this would be the light at the end of the tunnel.
This is a very serious inquiry. Please contact me at my phone number: [redacted]. Text messaging preferred.
Thank you for your time.
Clearly, Alyssa’s skills in persuasive writing paid off, because she actually received a reply from Mike’s owner! Better yet, he was happy to give Mike to her for free, so long as she sent him a photo of her and her roommate with Mike so that the now-former owner’s kids could see.
Well, Alyssa followed through, and now, over 800,000 people on Twitter have reacted to this happy ending:
This surprisingly lovely interaction between two strangers is proof that there’s goodness left in the world. Alyssa’s story is proof that if you want something, you should go for it! The worst they can say is “no.”
