Dogs may be considered “man’s best friend,” but one dachshund named Stanley is actually a seal’s best friend.
Stanley and his pal, Aayla, met at the Sea Life Trust Cornish Seal Sanctuary while the dog and his human, Melanie, were on vacation. Stanley and Aayla, who is a permanent resident of the sanctuary, saw each other through the glass and were immediately drawn to each other. Melanie told BoredPanda that the two unlikely friends spent about twenty minutes interacting with each other through their transparent barrier, providing the perfect opportunity for an adorable photo session.
Aaylah first came to the sanctuary in 2008, malnourished and with an injured flipper that would ultimately require surgery to have some of the bones removed. Her fascination with visiting dogs isn’t strictly limited to Stanley, though the two seemed to have a particularly strong connection.
The land pup and the sea pup have won hearts around the world since their initial meeting, and Melanie is using her platform to help spread information about the great work the sanctuary is doing for seals like Aaylah.
The sanctuary helps rehabilitate seals in need, and while the goal is to return them to the wild, some animals who would be at risk due to injury or other conditions are kept at the sanctuary permanently to live out their lives in comfort and safety.
Stanley and Aaylah may live in very different habitats, but their love for each other is proof that it doesn’t matter what you look like or where you come from — friendship is always possible!
