Rats get a bad reputation, but in reality, these rodents are intelligent, sweet creatures that make excellent pets! As you might imagine, though, pet rats — like pet cats and dogs — often find themselves without a suitable home, and that’s where Rachie’s Ratirement Home comes in.
As Rachie herself puts it on the rescue’s page,
“Rats are surrendered here for all sorts of reasons, where myself and my network of foster carers work with them to ensure that their health and temperament are suitable to be adopted out into a new pet home. It’s important that healthy, happy rats are adopted, as many rats become ‘permanents’ here for reasons such as advanced age or illness, human or rat aggression, or sometimes just because they need company in their twilight months after losing a cage-mate where their owners can still visit.”
Rachie funds her efforts with her own money and the help of donations, and while taking care of dozens of rats at a time is serious business, she also knows how to have some fun with it. She’s been sharing the “best” and “worst” rats of the week on the page, shaming the “bad” rats and giving the “good” ones credit where it’s due. And trust us, the results are hilarious.

Also, big love to Bean-Bean, who passed away yesterday, and his adopters, #FosterAngelJulie and Fez. Bean-Bean was adopted a year ago and we’ve had close contact with him since, he was born of a girl named Lucky who was found on the street, injured, pregnant and terrified. Julie offered up this suggestion of Bean-Bean last week before he passed away, and we felt that honouring him as Worst Rat absolutely represented this lovable little bastard. RIP you absolute turd, we love you.”

I don’t know about you, but these rat superlatives are making me want a rat of my own! It just goes to show that what some people consider pests are really just intelligent, adorable animals with huge personalities!
