Animal shelters have a tough job to do — they have to advertise pets in a way that portrays them to be the ideal companions for the right people, then match them up with the perfect humans to create a happy home for everyone involved. But what happens when a shelter pet is — put simply — a jerk?
That’s the dilemma that the Mitchell County Animal Rescue in North Carolina faced when they received Perdita: a shorthair cat who was given to the shelter when her owner passed away. Perdita was so cranky that the shelter staff thought she might be sick, but the veterinary exam revealed that, nope, she’s just an angry girl.
Rather than lying or sugar-coating Perdita’s personality to potential adopters, the shelter put out a brutally honest Facebook post about the crabby cat to get some attention for her. The post has since gone viral, and when you read it, it’s easy to see why:
“Meet Perdita, not for the faint of heart. LIKES: staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again; the song Cat Scratch Fever, the movie Pet Cemetery (Church is her hero), jump scares (her specialty), lurking in dark corners, being queen of her domicile, fooling shelter staff into thinking she’s sick (vet agrees…she’s just a jerk) DISLIKES: the color pink, kittens (yuk they are so chipper), dogs, children, the Dixie Chicks, Disney movies, Christmas and last but NOT least…HUGS. She’s single and ready to be socially awkward with a socially awkward human who understands personal space. FREE ADOPTION

The reverse psychology trick seems to have worked. People seem up to the challenge, and the rescue has received over fifty applications to adopt the kitty. Many people have also acknowledged that Perdita has been through a lot, and a comfortable home away from the hectic day-to-day of the animal rescue might be just what she needs to come around to loving humans again.
Keep your fingers crossed for Perdita!
