Have you ever experienced an earthquake? These geological phenomena are common in many parts of the world, but whether you’re used to them or not, they can definitely be a bone-rattling experience!
At least we humans have the benefit of knowing what an earthquake is, though. Can you imagine being an animal and suddenly feeling the earth shake inexplicably beneath you?
That was the experience of a mother eagle and her chicks when an earthquake hit the area where they lived, shaking the tree and the nest. At first, the mother eagle flew off, understandably shaken (literally and metaphorically) by what was happening. But after surveying the area to make sure that nothing was coming to attack her chicks, the courageous mama came back to the nest, even as the ground was still shaking.
When you think about it, it takes a lot of bravery for an animal to come back to her young, even when she may be safer in the air, as the world trembles around her. She had no way of knowing what was really happening or how much of a threat it might be to her and her young, and yet, rather than waiting for the danger to pass, she came back and stood prepared ready to defend her young from whatever was causing this sudden disturbance.
