If you remember shopping for dolls as a kid, you probably got extra excited when you found one that looked like you. For many children, though, simply finding a doll that they can relate to is difficult, if not impossible.
39-year-old Clare Tawell discovered this when she tried to find baby dolls for her four-year-old daughter, Matilda. You see, Matilda is Deaf, and Clare was frustrated when she realized how hard it was to find any dolls with hearing aids like what her daughter wore.
Clare decided to take the matter into her own hands by creating Bright Ears UK. Through the organization, Clare modifies dolls to have the same conditions or devices as the kids who want to play with them. Some of the dolls have cleft palates, and others have feeding tubes or cannulas. Of course, Clare hasn’t forgotten why she started Bright Ears UK in the first place, and there are plenty of available dolls that sport hearing aids of all different colors.
Check out some of the Bright Ears dolls below, and keep them in mind if you know a special kid who should have a doll that looks like them.
