The Chernobyl disaster is one of the most infamous incidents in modern history. In 1986, a nuclear accident occurred, sending out dangerous radiation and forcing nearby residents to evacuate.
The 19-mile radius surrounding the plant was designated as the “Exclusion Zone,” and these days, it’s mostly forest and crumbling buildings, as nature has begun to reclaim the area. It’s considered safer to travel to nowadays, and some people have dared to venture out there for research or curiosity. Still, not everyone left the Zone, and one man found a family who was still thriving way out there.
Benjamin Rich, a travel blogger who goes by “bald and bankrupt” on YouTube, went to visit the Zone and hoped to find some residents on his trip. After some exploring, he eventually found what he was looking for. A man named Igor was still living in the Zone with his 92-year-old mother. They gave Benjamin an inside look on their simple, unusual lives and answered some questions about the accident and how it changed their lives forever.
