Jeopardy! fans were crushed last year when they learned that the show’s host, Alex Trebek, had been diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer. The prognosis was grim for the 79-year-old — only 18 percent of people diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer survive a year past their diagnosis. But thankfully, Trebek has beaten the odds and just celebrated a year of survival following his diagnosis.
Trebek released a video updating fans on his condition, sharing the good news along with the struggles he’s undergone during what was surely a harrowing year. In the video, Trebek says that things became so tough that he often thought about giving up, but that he didn’t because he felt that doing so would betray his loved ones and fans. He also delivered a message of hope, saying that both he and his oncologist believe he’ll be celebrating his second year of survival a year from now.
