A wise animal lover once said that having a pet is like borrowing happiness. From the day we bring them home, we know that we’ll most likely see the day that we have to tell them goodbye as they leave this life. The experience is heartbreaking, but it’s important to be there for our furry friends when they pay that final visit to the vet.

Artist Jenny Hefczyc, who goes by Jenny-Jinya online, is known for making hauntingly beautiful (and yes, tear-jerking) comics depicting animals meeting Death. In Jenny’s world, Death is compassionate, acting as an ambassador for creatures departing Earth and moving on to the other side.

Jenny’s latest comic is hitting home for pet owners who have had to make the difficult choice to put their pets to sleep. It’s our final act of kindness that we can do for them, and the experience is sadly relatable for pet owners around the world. But Jenny frames this moment in a loving light and in the process reminds us of how important it is for us to be there in our pets’ final moments, no matter how hard it may be for us.
